Flickr get redesign and emphasize on Geotags

June 24th, 2010

Flickr gets a redesign and they emphasize on Geotags. I believe the location should be a part of Exif. I think the next feature to add to system cameras is actually gps so that you always know where you took the pictures.

There are of course some other features like reaching alot more directly from picture page and more. You are already able to play with it. Just log into Flickr and play around.

Remember to read the terms so you know what you say is ok to Yahoo the large coorporation that bought Flickr. You will need a Yahoo account to use Flickr. As well as you will need a Google account to be able to use Picasa.

Presenting your photos in a nice cloud in a Flickr widget

May 26th, 2010

Roy Tanck’s Flickr Widget requires Flash Player 9 or better.

Get this widget at roytanck.com

Roy Tanck have created a simple way to present your Flickr images in an image cloud. You must authorize others to use Flickr API. It’s very neat and easy to use on your blog or website. It is very easy to customize the widget to your needs. You fill out a form where you decide how it should look like the size and background. You can even make it great for a whole page, but it is not something I recommend because the pictures become very pixly.

There you will also need to know is your Flickr ’s RSS Feed. You’ll find it at the bottom of your flickr page. The link is on the “Latest” or the link provided on the orange RSS icon. When you are finished with the form, simply press the “Generate” and your code will appear in the window below the form. The click and copy to paste where you want it on your blog or website. It will show the most recent published photos on Flickr. So when you upload a new image appears on top of your widget.

The images in this widget presents my latest Flickr photos .

Flickr – put your picture on the map and clusters (Part 3)

With a simple link you will be at map

Following a question from a reader so I started to look at this to find out their photos on Flickr. I had been given to me that it was complicated, but I quickly learned that it was very easy. Just go to the image you want to put on the map and then you will find a link under “Additional Information”.

When you click it, you will enter a map mode where you see your image in the bottom and the map above.

You can maneuver around the map by dragging the map, or use arrows. You can zoom in and out also. It is good to start with a large map to zoom in to the right place. Try also typing names instead of search. It is quite possible that others have put pictures there and then the map will zoom into the right place.

When your at map you place the pic and pull it over
the map where you want it.

Flickr has lots of nice features and one of the newer so-called “cluster”. Flickr assembles clusters of images that are tagged with the same thing and you can easily get an overview. I found it easy to surf around the different clusters and find new nice collections of photos. Here are a few that I got stuck in africa, climate, twister and photo. You can easily surf on through the proposed similar tags or guess on a custom tag in the box where it says Jump to:. Flickr cluster is of course a great way to find inspiration for new, interesting subjects and ideas.

It’s really exciting to explore flickr. There will be new functions all the time also, there are a lot of mashups that facilitates enormously.

Put your photos on the map with various webservices

January 10th, 2010

Together with Google maps has a number of services popping up and developed, where you can select a location on the map. On selection, you can then link to an image or pair it with a movie even. Some are not so difficult to use either, and can be a good way to select a site for a friend or perhaps show where there was a tree growing with image on the tree. With these tools, we can identify all the earth together.

worldexplorer flickrI discovered the World Explorer, operated and developed by Yahoo, where you’ve linked the map (Yahoo maps) to Flickr, so those who want to outsource their images on the World Explorer. In Flickr, there is the possibility of linking their pictures to places even if it is not so simple. However, I think World Explorer is a fun way to explore different cities. Now that if you put your images it can be seen all over through Flickrs API. I think you can opt out that.

Easier to use and really useful when you want, for example, show their favorite spot for a friend and associate it with an image of the place is Tagzania. Tagzania is using Google maps, but is a stand-alone service so you must register in order to begin use it. If I for example where to meet a friend at the pub “Tranan” at Odenplan so I simply put out a marker and places where a URL where the image is located. It may be on Flickr or another URL where you have your image. Each marker may be a URL, so it’s easy for you to copy and mail your friend, he finds crane at Odin. What could be better would be printed, which I can recommend. You can also see other tags on the map so you can find other markings. Nature photographer may be able to select the various observation points and share with their friends.

worldexplorer flickrThe third and final service, Community Walk is also really useful because you can mark out a path so you can show your walk or jog addition, you can add various media files. You can add there voice, images and video. Kristian from Bitlab Malmoe did a tour of Old Town in Stockholm. Christian has stayed here and there to film and he has marked the way he has gone. This would surely be a great way for tourist to show off their city by going out and filming short little snippets that are then put into the grid. You were going to shoot myself maybe your childhood town and talk about different places where you made little mischief. That would be fun if Lisa had a small matkaravan for the network as they themselves could follow. You can use Google Translate to translate it to your language, if your curious.

Flickr – notes and to download photocode (Part 2)

December 28th, 2009

flickr logotypeThere are a lot of other nice features in Flickr and one is of their notes. Search by when you have entered the picture, press “Add note” you will then get a box where you can and write a headline and description. The box can be made smaller or larger and are a great way to make viewers of the picture’s attention to a part of the picture. Kosmar has built up one Mindmap of notes with links so you can be more creative with Flickr. You can then use the images on a whole new way. Clemens has used a picture of the London Underground system and this has then linked to different images in Flickr from locations. It is only your creativity is the limit how you use Flickr.

To submit an image on your website or blog to Flickr, the rules say that it is okay as long as you link back to Flickr, however, do not use Flickr to upload picture elements in a web design or similar. You just press on the picture and then the title “All Sizes”. Then you get choices on how big the picture should be on your website / blog. I have started a blog to show the power of using Ipernity, which is a “flickr” where you can upload “any” file or dokument. What i know they still have a hard time with .ODF files, but then you can save them as .doc which ipernity understands.

Once you’ve made your selection, you can find the code to clear the picture below. Just select it and copy it into your blog or website where you want it to be. If you want it to allow text to flow around so you can add the following code style = “float: left;” after the alt code. If you wish, of course, of course, replace the left to right, depending which side you want the image to lie around the text. You can find my group of photo and pictures on Ipernity. Downhere is an album of my pictures from my mobile.

More advanced: Flickr and other services using the API, and with it you can use different functions from other tjänser or on its own page. Through it you can actually get your sets slideshows on your own blog / website, but it requires some coding. Ipernity you can make albums and show them in your blog. Here you see my mobile’s pictures.

Making a photo blog for wide pictures with Blogger and Flickr

February 12th, 2009

photo blogYou can create a photo blog with large images using Blogger if you make the template so that it allows greater width. The reason for the article on the photo blog with broad layout is an email from a reader on my Swedish site Bild och foto:

“Thanks for a great page that is very useful. Many hours are spent here … I want to create my own photoblog, but I have looked around at others blogs and I have some requirements …. I want to write a short text and display images. I have looked at the service that Blogger provide and tried a little but I cannot upload images that are 800 pixels wide. Do you know if there is any guide to wordpress for my English skills are not very good ..
Grateful for answers. ”

I assume that you know how to create a photoblog at Blogger. You must edit the template a little so that you can fit in your large images. I use the simplest template ‘Minima’ and then I adjust the colors so that images are highlighted. I like a relatively neutral dark gray others might want to have white or black. You can see at my photoblog what colour i like.

edit templateThe next step will be to edit the template itself. You go into the “Layout” page and select “Edit HTML”. Scroll down until you find “# outer-wrapper” and adjust it so that the width is 1024 pixels. It should now say “width: 1024px;”. Then adjust the “# main-wrapper” to “width: 810px;” and “# sidebar-wrapper” to “width: 180px;”. Do not forget to finish off by saving the template or you will lose your new settings. Now, your large images will fit on the blog.

Now we come to the next step and that is that you should be using Flickr to easily store and even paste images in blogger. You certainly can use Photobucket or even Bloggers own image hosting. If you use Bloggers inbuild service your pictures will end up att Picasaweb on your Google-account. Please remember to read the Terms of service so you know what rights you have on the chosen hosting service. Flickr also comes with the ability to embed slideshows and that is easily done in Blogger.

If you don’t know how Flickr works you can take a peek at Webware’s article about Flickr for beginners. I usually scale my images so that they have their largest side no greater than 800 pixels. I do it for two reasons: firstly, the pictures load more quickly in the browser, but also it is a protection so people or companies steal your images. If the want to use the high resolution image, they must contact me. Do not forget to sharpen the image after you’ve changed the size. You always lose sharpness when you downsize.

Now, when you should make your posts on your new photo blog with the broad template so you simply go to the Flickr image that you want to post on the blog. You select the “All Sizes” and select the 800px size that you have uploaded. Below the picture is a box where you just select the code and then you paste it into your blog post. Publish and then your ready and can blog wildly on your new wide photo blog.

If you want to have just one picture on the front like me. Go to “Settings” where you will find under “Formatting”. Here you can edit the number of posts on the front page.
