One Saturday morning with photo

June 5th, 2010

leaf b/wPhoto gives so much. I am making cellphone’s photo. Remember i have a group of photos within Ipernity, Cellphone, where mobile camera may be in focus. You can by simple means take good pictures you do not need a SLR and just let good knowledge of image and what it entails be in the centre. I thought that together we can explore the potential of mobile.

You can take good pictures with the camera that you always have with you. It is only knowledge, which is needed what it is capable of. Together with a good editing software such as Gimp, it is quite a lot. It will take you pretty far even with 5 Megapixel with 2 Megapixel, but how far? You can see examples in my album what you can do. Come and join before you can safely transfer some of the knowledge of your compact camera or to your SLR. Everyone can participate. You just need to somehow be able to transfer your pictures to Ipernity. With USB or otherwise. We can probably help each other. I want to see your pictures with your mobile!

You are clearly building your composite skills and will improve fast everyday.

Video Fashion photographer Mario Testino on You Tube

May 28th, 2010

Mario Testino is one of the world’s best fashion photographers and here he is portrayed in a video by CNN on You tube. It can be seen as being glamorous fashion photographer, but it’s a tough job with hard work. The models may work just as hard and it is an incredibly competitive business sector. Photography is not always so easy and I am actually glad that it is a hobby that I enjoy and not a full-time job.

Part 2 and part 3.

Panning of the carousel with compact camera

May 27th, 2010

panning carouselI tested an advanced technology with our compact digital camera. It goes very well to do panning with your compact camera if it has manual settings. We have a Canon PowerShot A720 IS, but also our previous compact camera, the PowerShot A85 has manual settings. Panning is a technique where you have a slow shutter speed to say you are exposing for a relatively long period of time while moving the camera as the subject. It requires much practice and take many pictures so you get the picture you want. You may well use a tripod if your subject is moving sideways.

I have a situation where my son goes carousel and he is in shadow, making it possible to expose for a long time without burning out motives or background. The problem is that if you have slow shutter speeds in daylight that you are overexposed and receive a lot of white. I set the camera to TV mode so that I could adjust the time, but when the camera is adjusted aperture and other settings. Here I thought that between 1 / 15 s gave the best results, but of course it depends on what light you have. When you get above 1 / 50’s, you will have to move the camera very quickly to have any effect.

panning carsI took some pictures of adults who traveled with their children in the daylight to show that it quickly becomes overexposed at slow shutter speeds. Here’s how it is that direct sunlight is overexposed but it is in shadow for correct exposure. There is sometimes a fun power to overexpose a little. In this image I have used a dark background as it may be exposed to contrast against.

Hepatica – with a receipt as reflective screen

May 18th, 2010

photo anemone hepaticaOn the photo of Anemone hepatica I have used simple means to get the effect I want. I want to have an unified view of the flower and used an oak leaf that occurs naturally in the environment where the hepatica grows.

To get more light on anemone hepatica growing quite dark, I used an old receipt as a reflective screen. It lay and scatter in my jacket pocket so with the receipt, I could get more light. I then placed the subject after the classically 1/3 rule.

Photo editing and photo must be developed together

May 17th, 2010

photo frost levels photo editingIn order to develop your photo so it is important that you also develop your photo editing. The image here has a slight draw to blue because the camera’s white balance setting was awkward, but I photographed Raw format and knew I could change it in my image editing program. It is equally important to strengthen your photo with good photo editing. I do not mean that you are going to nest in front of your computer, but that just as the great masters were hugely skilled in the darkroom as you develop your skills in photo editing to bring your images to exceptionally good photos.

Here you see the picture when I was lifting it with photo editing. I have adjusted the hue and changed the contrast of the image. I am using layer masks to highlight the contrast to emphasize the feeling of frost. In addition, I sharpened the image using high pass and also the restricted to highlight the difference between the sharp frost and the soft toned background.

Brian Auer had a project some time ago on his blog where he let his readers edit an unedited photo and send in their version. You can see how different we look at the pictures and make sure you will find that although the initial situation is the same as different people can edit up completely different images. I think just like Brian that it is 50% and 50% photo editing to create a really good picture.

photo editing frost levelsIt is obviously that of photographic techniques to create lots of effects that can be done with photo editing, and vice versa. It is not the point. It is the feeling that you lift up the scene and what you get the audience to experience with your picture that is important. Today’s digital photography has his darkroom in the photo editing program and it is important to you as a photographer to master it.

If you want to take the best pictures so my advice to you that you will devote as much time to develop your photo editing and not just your photography. I see many images that are mediocre, and most of the photographers have missed learning to lift their images with good image editing. You should not sit in front of your computer and edit like hell know that you can never make a bad image to an exceptional. Maybe you can save it to be okay, but never a top image.

Old video from Zack Arias that has thoughts on photography

May 16th, 2010

Zack Arias has big ideas about life and photography. You just have to bring in and work in that spirit. This image may be the last you take, but it is equally important to carry around the idea that it is the first thing you do. Be curious about life and learn in each breath, but above all, breathe and enjoy each breath.
